Roland Garros 2008 - some stats for 15 matches

Mens game statistics taken from the ATP & Roland Garros websites are presented here in a flexible format so that the reader can compare stats for more than one match side by side. Those of you enjoying screen resolutions of 1280x1024 or higher can see stats for any three matches together on screen.

I'm adding to the Ace and Double Fault counts the more meaningful percentages they represent. I regret that the stats powers that be don't appear to keep count of first service winners other than the aces. I think that a count of the number of points won for hitting the ball just once could provide significant insight. Similarly, a count of outright winners on return of serve would be just as useful.

I plan to produce a page that will provide the means to show any of the Match Summary items for all fifteen matches covered in one table. This may be of interest... I don't even know if it will be of interest to me yet, but as the programming effort will not be exorbitant, it will get done.

I will also include a table that shows some internal inconsistencies in these stats. I've always thought that each point must be one of four types: Unforced Error by player A or player B, or Winner by player A or player B. Therefore A's Winners plus B's UE's should equal A's points won, whilst B's Winners and A's UE's should be equal to B's points won. The fact that no one at these tournaments checks that the statistics issued are at least internally consistent speaks volumes.

How to view these stats

The stats area of this page opens with the draw on the left and with slots 1 & 2 for match details to the right containing details of the final and the Federer semi-final. Slots 3,4 & 5 below the draw contain the statistics for the Nadal semi-final, the Nadal quarter-final, and the Federer quarter-final.

To see the stats of any match listed, click on the winners name in the draw table below. So for example to see the Gulbis v Llodra match stats, click on Gulbis' name in the Quarter Final column. By default, each new set of stats selected will appear in the slot next to the last one re-used. After slot 5, slot 1 will be used again. This default behavior can be over-ridden by pre-selecting the next slot by clicking on the desired number in the little table below this paragraph. And that's it.
